Roads, Roads and more Roads
There are three types of roads in Genesee Township.
1. State Highways i.e.: M-54/Dort Highway
2. County Roads, belonging to Genesee County Road Commission
3. Private Roads
The Genesee County Road Commission is responsible for maintaining state highways in Genesee County and all county roads. They are funded by the State of Michigan through the gasoline tax for this purpose. The gasoline taxes we pay at the pump, collected by the State of Michigan are returned to individual counties specifically for the purpose of road maintenance. Other user fees collected by the Secretary of State for licensing of vehicles and accessories also supplement the gasoline tax and are designated for road maintenance.
Tax dollars collected in the form of property taxes are not designated for roads unless a special election has approved such a tax.
Private roads are usually maintained by a special assessment voted on and paid for by the local homeowners association. Genesee Township has no Road Maintenance Department, nor do we have a voted special funding for road maintenance.
However, many complaints received at the township are related to roads. Everything from lack of maintenance on roads, plowing in the winter, potholes in spring, dust in the summer, roads sinking into swamps, speed limits, stop signs, etc.
Your elected Township Officials have no control over the operation of the Maintenance Department at the Genesee County Road Commission.
Other subjects related to roads such as traffic control devices, speed limits, stop signs and passing lanes we have minimal control over these issues. The Road Commission and the Michigan State police control most of these issues.
If the issue happens to be related to M-54, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) then will become involved. The Genesee County Road Commission is comprised of three individuals appointed to six-year terms by our County Board of Commissioners. This board also hires the Director of the Genesee County Road Commission.
Our elected County Commissioner is Rose Bogardus, she was elected in November of 2004, with overwhelming support from Genesee Township.
We are providing a list with the names and addresses of the individuals to contact regarding road problems, concerns or suggestions. Feel free to contact each of them and voice your concerns regarding the roads in our Township.
